Thing 5 -- Digital Storytelling

We have partnered on VoiceThread, Animoto and Xtranormal projects in my former elementary school, and we had fun with Voki and Blabberize in another school. Even though teachers want to incorporate more technology into projects, I have never been able to convince a teacher to abandon paper posters and use Glogster to create "live" projects! Unfortunately, these collaborative forays into the digital storytelling realm have not all been smooth and golden! I think that the problem is that technology can be so undependable, and we cannot depend on the tools to work smoothly in the 30 or 40-minute periods in which we have to create the magic! Even as I created the above Glogster presentation as a trial for an upcoming music class, I encountered glitches and delays. Multiply this by 25 students, and things could get messy. That being said, using Power Point as an introduction to digital projects has helped teachers and students turn from paper and pencil presentations to more creative projects. And adding one digital tool each year is less frightening than jumping in with both feet! From "playing with" Glogster, I learned that students should locate their resources first, do all research before creating, and it helps to save images, audio and video clips to the desktop. And I learned that I am ready to tackle a Glog with the Middle Schoolers next week!! Hopefully I can convince the teacher to play along!

Very wise approach to the tools. With short periods and so many students, it can get chaotic. And one new tool at a time is a great way to approach.

As the kids learn how to use the tools, do you see some of them taking on the "helper" role and assisting other students? And helping the teachers too?

I found the same problem with Glogster. My students loved creating their posters based on the research they had completed, but often ran into glitches within the Glogster site. I think Glogster has potential but needs to upgrade their product.

I am wondering whether to go with Pinterest or Learnist. Pros and cons: Pinterest is very popular, and seems like it is here to stay. Zesty Paws Oatmeal Anti-itch Dog Shampoo

This winter has been tough on our little pups; the bitter cold outside and dry heating inside have dried out their coats and fur. Most shampoos clean, but we found one with Vitamin E and Aloe Vera that also softens and soothes.      I love the description on the back of the bottle - it sounded like just the shampoo we needed. But then, they all claimed to work, and all they did was clean surface dirt.  But I have to say that I am impressed; the shampoo smells great (one pup even tried to taste it!) and it lathers well. We haven’t had a chance to try more than once in the test period, but so far it seems to deep-clean better, and to soothe the flakey skin. Pups are not only clean, but softer! She may not look like it here, but Kenzie feels so much better, now that her skin isn't dry and itchy, and her coat is soft and clean. It washed away the dandruff on  other doggies, and worked well on all types of coats. ZestyPaws makes a conditioner, too,...

Terrific sofa cover - for the right sofa!

We go through sofa covers with alarming speed.  I think we are on the sixth one in two dogs...And Ashton totally shredded one in a month!!   Since Kenzie has claimed the off-white sofa as her own,    I need to keep it protected. But it is hard to keep the cover on - Since she is so “active, I need to use upholstery pins to keep the cover in place! Would you believe that she bent every one of the pins, and they all came loose?  That's why I thought that this sofa cover ( http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01M32JJM2 ) would be the solution to our problems, since it has rolls that tuck in between the cushions and the frame to keep it in place, and a nice strap that wraps around the back of the sofa as well to keep the back covered.  However, I failed to measure and check the dimensions accurately, and the cover is far too small for Kenzie's sofa - which, admittedly, is a large one.
