Penless Party/Workshop

We hosted our Penless Memory Crafting Party as a workshop at the public Library this week. We advertised it in the local newspaper, on calendars in the library, and through posts on Facebook and Twitter. It was such fun helping people get started with the Penless Memory app, and the best part was that each participant had different ideas about how they would use the stickers!

Penless is a great app that allows us to link a photo or short video to a cute, colorful QR code. The recipient of the code just scans it (just point a smartphone camera at it!) to see the photo or video. It's so easy that youngsters and oldsters who are not tech-savvy can handle it, there is nothing to log into, and the recipient doesn't need to have the app to see the photos. It is great on gifts or greeting cards, but the possibilities for using these great stickers is endless! And it's SO easy!!

Although we were never all together at the same time, over the course of two hours, six people came and went, sometimes came and went again!! We had a nice spread of snacks, but most were too busy having fun with the Penless app to even eat!!

After they were all introduced to the app, and saw a demonstration and video about how it worked, every participant uploaded a a photo to a sticker, made a video to add to a sticker, and saved one of their projects to their library.  It was so easy - they were off and stickering in no time, thanks to the great handout that the folks at Penless provided.  And since they had 5 "practice" stickers and four more themed stickers in the Party Pack that Penless provided, they had more than enough to get started.  I bought 24 more stickers to give away as they left, and they were thrilled to know that they could use them to learn the app, and still have some left over for projects.

And they thought of great projects! The travel stickers are going into a journal of photographs that E took on her vacation, adding videos to the otherwise static album! M is adding videos of her son as a toddler to his baby album. And best of all, A decided to use stickers to make pop-up book talks that she will post around the library! We even thought of adding video driving directions to a party to the invitation! She was hoping to be able to link a longer video to each sticker, but will have to make her booktalks brief. After she leaves the stickers where the students can find them, the young readers can scan the QR codes and see her video clip - and hopefully will be enticed to read different books!

The best part of the Penless Memory Crafting Party / Workshop was that, even though people came and went at different times (two stayed for two hours collaborating on their creations!!) everyone was brought into the loop very quickly, and no one felt left out because they came late!

Everyone was thrilled to take home a supply of Penless stickers, a bookmark and a 25% discount on more supplies!! We were even asked to host another workshop like this in the future, but we will have to see if we can get more supplies!!!  And several wanted to know how to be a Tryazon host in the future!!

Thing 6 - Curation!

Curation! was the title of Joyce Valenza's keynote address and workshop at the 2012 NYLA/SSL Conference, and she introduced the word to hundreds of librarians in one swoop! I have to admit, I was feeling pretty self-satisfied at the time; after all, I had a fat and happy Delicious file, full of handy sites for all occasions. Why, I even searched for useful links through Delicious, adding and sharing with colleagues. Now I see that I am like the old librarian who collects hundreds of back issues of magazines, certain that they will "come in handy some day!". Curation is so much more of a Web3.0 tool: creating web content more than gathering it. So I gave Scoop. It another try. Diigo had scared me away with its daily updates in my email, and Pinterest is my guilty pleasure/personal-rather-than-educational site. I began following other Scoop-ers, three topics, and added a button to my toolbar. I even connected it to my Twitter feed, so that I can post Scoops there...

Thing 7: Podcasting and Screencasting

I am afraid that I approached this Thing with a little less enthusiasm than I should. You see, I am familiar with, and love ScreenR, ever since it helped me publish ALL of the 3rd graders' Blabberize Biography projects on one, easy to view page . I tried AudioBoo this week, as a test for an upcoming project: listen to ‘Test’ on Audioboo I am excited about the project, but not about AudioBoo. The students will be recording Book Reviews, and we will try to link them to the Online Library Catalog. With AudioBoo, they can only post one picture. Last year we used GarageBand to record reviews with 4th graders, and the result was less than satisfactory. The students spent more time struggling with the technology than they did learning about the book, or enjoying the project. The process strangled the project. We have decided this year to go low-tech, and use PhotoStory for this project. The students can post a few pictures about the book (the teacher wants 5 or mo...

Zesty Paws Oatmeal Anti-itch Dog Shampoo

This winter has been tough on our little pups; the bitter cold outside and dry heating inside have dried out their coats and fur. Most shampoos clean, but we found one with Vitamin E and Aloe Vera that also softens and soothes.      I love the description on the back of the bottle - it sounded like just the shampoo we needed. But then, they all claimed to work, and all they did was clean surface dirt.  But I have to say that I am impressed; the shampoo smells great (one pup even tried to taste it!) and it lathers well. We haven’t had a chance to try more than once in the test period, but so far it seems to deep-clean better, and to soothe the flakey skin. Pups are not only clean, but softer! She may not look like it here, but Kenzie feels so much better, now that her skin isn't dry and itchy, and her coat is soft and clean. It washed away the dandruff on  other doggies, and worked well on all types of coats. ZestyPaws makes a conditioner, too,...
